The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education announced that it is changing its name to reflect a broadening of its focus beyond campus borders: the organization, which promotes academic freedom, free speech and due process rights, is now the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. FIRE (whose acronym remains the same) said its $75 million expansion initiative centers on three main domains: litigation, public education and research. The group is also launching a $10 million Faces of Free Speech adverting campaign.
“America needs a new nonpartisan defender of free speech that will advocate unapologetically for this fundamental human right in both the court of law and the court of public opinion,” Greg Lukianoff, FIRE’s CEO and president, said in a statement. “FIRE has a proven track record of defeating censorship on campus. We are excited to now bring that same tireless advocacy to fighting censorship off campus.”
