  • Gov. Jon S. Corzine and New Jersey legislators said Thursday that they had reached a budget deal that would end the statewide shutdown that began Saturday. But college officials said late Thursday that they did not expect to find out until today how much of the nearly $300 million in proposed budget cuts to higher education the final agreement would restore. A bill put forward late last week by leaders in the state Assembly would have restored about $120 million of the cuts, but reports swirled Thursday that that total might be lower in the final deal.
  • Officials at Fork Union Military Academy, one of the high schools that the National Collegiate Athletic Association said it was examining as part of its crackdown on institutions with questionable academic rigor, expressed "outrage" at the school's inclusion on the list. "It is an unconscionable act to paint the academy with the same brush as those who are mocking the system," said Lt. Gen John E. Jackson Jr., president of the Virginia prep school. "This situation needs to be rectified by the NCAA at the speed of light or irreparable damage will result."
  • DeVry Inc. announced Thursday that it was changing the name of its recently purchased nursing school and planning to expand the college's reach, online and perhaps with new campuses. Deaconness College of Nursing, the St. Louis institution that DeVry bought from Tenet Healthcare in March 2005, will become Chamberlain College of Nursing, and DeVry plans to broaden the college's online bachelor's program for registered nurses and is exploring the possibility of creating Chamberlain campuses in Ohio and perhaps other states.
